About Me: I'm a bit shy at first then when I get to know people a little more I tend to chat more. I spend a great deal of time working on crafts or costumes. I also enjoy photographing gardens. This is where my love for fairies began. I love to travel and go crazy for old buildings. I would very much like to photograph Italy some day. My favorite time of year is Spring and Fall. The smell of moss reminds me of fairies. I try to use it as often as possible when I'm making a costume. My favorite artist is Thomas Barbey.
Music: Depends on my mood. I like everything. But if I had to choose a song right now it would be something that would make me want to get up and dance from Shakira.
Movies: I'm a huge fan of classic movies. Gone With the Wind, Casablanca and Breakfast at Tiffany's. I like movies with ladies in gowns and if they can't be in a gown they should at least look amazing in a suit. Comedy: Bob Hope, Abbott & Costello, Steve Martin, Jim Carrey, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore and so many more. I grew up in the 80's so pretty much anything from that generation is AMAZING!!! My favorite character actor is Johnny Depp, I first fell in love with him in Benny & Joon. Leonardo DiCaprio is my all time favorite actor. I love his movies, I just hate when he dies in them. I can't tell you how many times he's broken my heart. Of course my all time favorite movies are big budget movies that go all out on set design and COSTUME. Marie Antoinette makes me want to put on a ball gown and sit around eating chocolates and petite petifores for absolutely no reason at all. I'm a girl through and through but still love movies like Gladiator or 300. Who doesn't like hot muscular men all sweaty with huge gorgeous muscles in tiny costumes? I especially love movies during the holidays like Harry Potter and Hocus Pocus at Halloween. My favorite Disney Movie is a toss between Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan.
TV: I really don't watch t.v. that often. No News unless I have to watch it, then I prefer Comedy Central news. I like my bad news given to me delicately or with humor. When I do watch t.v. I enjoy the Discovery Channel, The Travel Channel, Ninja Warrior on G4 with my son and the rest I just skip through until something looks good.
Books: Fantasy, Romance and Mystery Sherlock Holmes to Harry Potter Anything from Candlewick Press I'm always looking for something good to read and not always fiction. My Favorite magazine is Vogue of course second would be ELLE because they do a lot of shoots outdoors and in gardens.
Likes: Creative people, the sound of children laughing, fishing, swimming, blue skies, sunshine, rainbows, butterflies, hills full of green grass, lavender, roses, irises, owls, my favorite tree is the Weeping Willow, the sound of waves crashing on the shore, palm trees, sand dunes and the country.
Dislikes: People that are mean to children or animals. Anything depressing or too sad. I just can't stomach it. People that can't be trusted and people that hurt other people. So basically war is OUT. Liars, Jealousy and Pollution
Hobbies: Crafting, photography, dress making, people watching and shopping for that perfect outfit.
    Vices: Ice cream and Cake
Virtues: Confidence Quick thinker friendly multi tasked When I say I'm going to do something I do it.
Heroes: Superman, James Bond and my husband. Batman is pretty cute too.

    Banshee Lily

The Banshee Lily was the very first adult costume that I made for Fairy Court.

Lily comes from a place where the earth is covered in beauty and light.

The character was designed to be more of a personal guardian to the Queen of Light and a protector of children. She is the only fairy that can give wings to mortals.

When I first came up with the concept for this character, I wanted her to be exotic and beautiful, to stand out from all the other fairies as unique yet powerful.

My biggest inspiration for all of my costumes comes from the famous designer Bob Mackie. I think it is most obvious with this character and the Phoenix Banshee that will be shown in a later blog.

As you can see Lily is almost camouflaged in the tall grass, this was inspired by the wonderful work of Brian Froud. Staying true to Lily’s natural beauty and heritage the Aztec warriors of southern Mexico inspired the use of pheasant feathers as well as costume style.

This is really beautiful! I love how there is a sense of camouflaging, as you mentioned.
    The headpiece looks extraordinary.

    Enchanted Dreams by Alexandria LaNier

      Enchanted Dreams

When I first decided to create fairy costumes I wanted to do a nice variety of styles in order to appeal to a wider range audience.  A little something for everyone seemed like a nice idea.  The Fairy Princess is one of my first costumes I created. I envisioned a Cinderella style fairy for little girls and big girls that love the classic fairytale.

You left out the style part that says "And for the men who envision themselves as the Prince!"

    Fairy Lights Portal

    An Invitation
    From the Queen of Light
At the edge of every garden, forest and shoreline of our world
is an opening to the Fairy Realm within the
Celestial Sphere. Believing in the magic of the universe
and the mysteries it holds is the key to unlocking the secret
doorways though which fairies travel. Of course, a rare
invitation from a fairy is the easiest way to pass through
    these ancient portals.
With honorable respect from Her Majesty,
    The Queen of Light,
your presence dear friend of fairy, has been requested.
May wings of flight guide your dreams as you journey
    into the Fairy Realm.

Ooo, wow! You know how you're walking through the day, and then all of a sudden you see something, and it kicks awake a dream you just had the night before? This did it!

I dreamed I and someone else came to a certain "mystical" spot at a Ren Faire... Just some multi-trunked little tree (I remember now! It was right next to the fortune-teller's booth at the old Novato Ren Faire!). Anyways we both knealt down in front of it and started a kind of little singing chant, mine different from the other one, but they rythmed together in sync, and as we sang, the "tree" in front of us slowly meta'd into a portal to another world!

Shoot, that's all I remember! I don't even know if we went through it or not... But how fun that your image grabbed on to that dream and brought it to the waking life! (Unique harmonizing mantra too!) :^)

Hey, so does this mean you're gonna come up to our FaeryWood btw? It would be a total blast getting to see you, and perhaps Susan could come down from Redding? (Nudge-nudge!)

Dreaming of Dragons from Once Upon A Fairy Court

    Saturday, July 12, 2008, 04:34 PM [General]

    Dreaming of Dragons

    Dragonia
Part dragon, part fairy, Dragonia's blood
burns like the fire in her heart.
With the ability to see far beyond the
Fairy Realm to where all dreams
    begin, Dragonia peers inside your
soul at both strengths and weaknesses,
then grants the gift of fire and wisdom
to those that face their fears.

    =Alexandria LaNier

    Dream Interpretation Dragon
This large, mystical creature may represent large and mystical forces inside of you. In the Far-East it is believed that the dragons are spiritual creatures that navigate through the air and through the sky. In the West, dragons are considered to be dangerous creatures that need to be destroyed. As far as dream symbols go, the dragon may represent the enormous power in your unconscious. It could symbolize repressed unconscious material, including fear. However, the dragon in our dreams is generally a positive symbol. It may represent a period of time when the dreamer will confront his fears and empower himself to effectively cope with negative emotions, extreme materialism, and be able to obtain greater inner and outer freedom.

ok the names for the banshee are:Badhbh, Macha and Mor-Rioghain. and depending on which form she is in depends on the name.

    Badhbv-the young woman
    Macha-the matron
    Mor-Rioghain-the old hag

there is one banshee type but three different forms and names. But the banshee's forms represent the celtic goddess of war and death.

The bean-sidhe (woman of the fairy may be an ancestral spirit appointed to forewarn members of certain ancient Irish families of their time of death. According to tradition, the banshee can only cry for five major Irish families: the O'Neills, the O'Briens, the O'Connors, the O'Gradys and the Kavanaghs. Intermarriage has since extended this select list.

the banshee chiefly appears in one of three guises: a young woman, a stately matron or a raddled old hag. These represent the triple aspects of the Celtic goddess of war and death.( let me know if you would like to know the names)

She usually wears either a grey, hooded cloak or the winding sheet or grave robe of the unshriven dead. She may also appear as a washer-woman, and is seen apparently washing the blood stained clothes of those who are about to die. Hense her name as the "washing woman."

Although not always seen, her mourning call is heard, usually at night when someone is about to die.

There are records of several human banshees or prophetesses attending the great houses of Ireland and the courts of local Irish kings. In some parts of Leinster, she is referred to as the bean chaointe (keening woman) whose wail can be so piercing that it shatters glass. In Kerry, the keen is experienced as a "low, pleasant singing"; in Tyrone as "the sound of two boards being struck together"; and on Rathlin Island as "a thin, screeching sound somewhere between the wail of a woman and the moan of an owl".

The banshee may also appear in a variety of other forms, such as that of a hooded crow, stoat, hare and weasel - animals associated in Ireland with witchcraft.

Let me know if you want to know of anything else.

I like Mr Depp too *big smiles* As for Batman, we're all really excited about The Dark Knight which comes out a week later over here, not fair :( Living in a house of guys all passionate about the comic book worlds, it's not surprising I got involved! I like to think that I redress the balance rather with my taste in films, as I also adore beautiful costumes & cinematography ~ the V & A Museum is one of my favourite places to visit & wander in... =)
