    Have you ever felt discouraged....

Thursday, June 12, 2008, 03:36 AM PST [General]

because you noticed online, that there are artists around the world who are so far above you in skill and imagination that you will never even get halfway as far as they?  Yes, you admire their work, you wish you were as good, you wonder how they do it, but you know you yourself will never be in their league.

Things used to be simpler. I know everyone says that, but in the case of computers/internet, it's true. So many artists were famous in their own little communities, their towns. They had a name, others were proud of them, they felt they had achieved something worthwhile and lasting with their life. Then we invent the internet.... Suddenly there is no small town, no small community (not even here). There are artists from Poland, Britain, Netherlands, Germany, etc., countries you may never visit, but you can see their work. You watch it sell. You see there are fabulous, great artists all over the planet. That brings home that you are only in a small part of it. Very small.

It's nice to make friends online with other artists. It's great to encourage others and watch them become successful. Yet it can also leave a person feeling "left behind" with that "I'll never be good enough" feeling.

Has anyone ever felt that way?

    Yes. <3
Chin up, though. You have your own style and own imagination that no one can compete with. :] You have something special that is completely unique.

Taryn I know you have *very* limited equipment. Limited software running on your very limited (and often troubled) PC. Not to mention all the fixes you've had to do when held up. So I can't help but wonder if it's mostly that which is getting you down.

Man I *wish,* with my night-photography angle, that I could afford to capture those dancers with a Canon 40D, especially having that sensor cleaning I don't have now. I wish I had that great zoom lens too. Or that Nikon D300 that takes excellent quality pics at ISO 3200... Wow, would my "skill" excel then!

Alas though, I can barely afford the rent out here in the sticks, watching others take those wonderful pics that I can't touch.

Still, their "skill" is in the equipment they can afford... That's the only thing I see you and I lacking for. (We'll get there some day! ;^)

    Yes Yes Yes !!!
All the time. There is always gonna be someone who is better than me in my eyes. But if there wasn't, who would I look up to.
It's impossible to look at your own work impartially. It looks different to everybody else.
I know how it feels to be discouraged and sometimes it's hard to feel inspired and become overwhelmed.
This is what I do - I do something for myself - a little bit of sewing or painting it doesn't have to be fantastic just something that makes me feel happy.
I try not to dwell on what others do, I don't look at what they do. I turn the computer off and enjoy being small but happy in my own little world. One thing is for sure you are definately not on your own in this.

Thanks everyone for your comments! I figured others felt that way too. It's worse when you get older, btw, not as easy to learn new things, or remember what you have learned.

    Hello Art Sorceress,
Thank you for the friendship & for all your kind comments on my pics!
Yes I am very lucky to live near enough to the stones to be able to visit quite regularly. That whole area is alive with magical energy.
To answer your question on the Anemone, it's actually shot through glass as it's in an aquarium tank! I tried to photograph it so that didn't show though!
The magical twisted tree was shot at the midsummer Merry Meet we just had! Definately full of faerie magic, it drew me in!
The beautiful girlie in my pics is indeed my Daughter, & already a teenager (13 in fact, though she doesn't look it, but She is a Faerie after all!)
    Faerie Blessings to you,

    Hi,

Thank you so much for the compliments about my art work.
You're work is very lovely. You're quite talented.

It is quite a voyage trying to get your work published by different companies. You have to keep knocking on doors, not waiting for them to find you. Once in a while you might be lucky, to be in the right place at the right time, but mostly, it takes a lot of a "never give up" attitude. Believe in yourself, and your talent, and hopefully you will find some publishers in different markets. But I assure you - it doesn't happen over night! It takes a while.

GOOD LUCK - my friend! You'll get there, since you have much talent and vision!

    Hi Art Sorceress :D,

I agree, art is ageless, fantasy art especially :-). I do the odd bit of sketching but I've never tried 3D before, gosh I wouldn't know where to start, hehe. I've seen some 2D pictures online, they always look fantastic. All I managed was a very wonky leaf!! lol.
That's an awful shame they're cutting down the forests where you are :'-(. We have a forest near us, and although they do cut plots of trees down, they replant all the time, on a sort of rotational system, thankfully. We've only been here 4 months so it's taken us a while to get used to the country ways. Unfortunately they do have a lot of newcomers who don't try and fit in. There's a nice historic country village just up the road from us, who've recently had to endure having glaring modern street lights put up, because the newcomers complained it was too dark at night O_o
