About Me: My name is Scot. I’ve been a professional artist since the mid 90’s. I was born in England and at the tender age of one I emigrated with my family to Australia. This was the first of a series of moves which included time spent living in Indonesia, New Zealand, the US and Switzerland. I now live in the Peak District in Derbyshire where we run a small family (My mother is an artist too) business ‘The Barnstudio', www.Barnstudio.com. We produce fine art prints, greeting cards etc in a variety of themes including; the English landscape, animals, figures and fantasy. I’m driven to be creative and I love to paint. In particular I enjoy painting fantasy- fairies, mermaids, castles etc. It allows me to be more creative with design, colour and settings. I’ve had difficulty finding a platform for my fairy/fantasy art and I hope to use my blog here to let others see my creations - I enjoy painting them and would like others to see them too.

    "Moon Girl" mixed media original

    Tuesday, September 23, 2008, 06:12 AM [General]

The "Moon Girl" painting/collage started with an idea I had for producing a cloud effect. As this idea wouldn't have worked with my usual watercolour style I had a go at producing a collage.

To make the clouds I scanned the cream patterned fabric and then printed it onto a thick cotton paper. I suggested the cloud shapes by over painting parts of the scanned pattern with a dilute mixture of acrylic cobalt blue and a little white. I cut out the shape of the outer edge of the clouds using a scalpel (I knew that it would come in handy someday) and then bonded the cut-out onto the canvas board with strong glue.

I suggested the tree and abstract hill in watercolour and added some acrylic gold and renaissance gold swirls (the sparkly gold doesn't show up too well in this scan).

I painted the Moon girl figure in acrylic and watercolour.

Thank you, Scot, for the very nice comment you left me on my "Ghost and the Fairy". I enjoyed doing that piece very much.
But, mostly, I am glad you left me a comment which in turn brought me back here and I didn't miss this wonderful painting, "Moon Girl".
I always enjoy it when you post a new piece because I love your style. The background, especially the clouds, are wonderful in this picture. Very creative.

    "Rose" original watercolour painting.

    Saturday, July 19, 2008, 12:44 PM [General]

I started this painting with the intention of calling it "Rose and Thorn" but as she doesn't look all that menacing I settled on just "Rose" instead . Anyways beware of prickly women bearing flowers.

She's lovely...and that is good advice about prickly women;). You should come and sell your work on Etsy~ we have a lovely group of fantasy artists there who would make you feel right at home, and Im sure your pieces would be very popular!!

The fact that she has light behind her & is emersed in soft pastels (a being of light, in other words) is what makes her non-menacing (to me, anyway). The rose is the one thing that stands out, but the symbolism of the red rose is love with passion (and of course, passion can sometimes mean anger, but mostly it means desire).

Anyway, gorgeous color with the blend of pinks, purples & blues with the blonde & touch of green around the eyes & in the stem.

    Completed "Wood Spirit" Painting

    Sunday, May 18, 2008, 04:24 PM [General]

There's not much difference compared to the last sample but this is the completed watercolour including the painted leaves. It took me most of the day to paint the border. After the first three or four leaves it bacame tiring and repetitve but worth it as I think that the border does improve the picture. I slightly altered the eyes too. She was a little cross eyed.

I love the finished product! I really appreciate that you have taken a bit of time to explain the process as well...to me this sort of creating is just a magical process and it is fun to be able to follow your steps.

When I first looked at her I thought she was just sweet an demure, but when I looked in her eyes I can see the steely determination and protectiveness...being a mum, I recognize that silk and steel "dont mess with my own" expression;-)

    'Wood Spirit' Original Painting

    Sunday, May 4, 2008, 01:06 PM [General]

The ‘Wood Spirit' is trying to help restore the balance of nature by encouraging new growth. She's not too happy about the felled tree and the fact that her undertaking is becoming an increasingly difficult task but she is determined. I wanted this to be evident in her intense expression and piercing stare.

The leaf border isn't painted on (yet). I wasn't sure whether or not painting on the Ivy would add anything so I did a mock-up with real leaves and superimposed them onto the painting scan. I think the Ivy border helps frame the wood spirit and also adds more of a forest feel. When I get the chance I'll paint the border on.

    "Fern" Original watercolour Fairy

    Thursday, April 17, 2008, 11:02 AM [General]

I intended my next painting to be a darker, gothic style picture but I've been inspired by our late spring to paint something greener. The colour theme in this painting was also partly inspired by the renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli's ‘Birth of Venus'. I don't know whether it's the result of centuries of ageing but I love the subtle washed out blues and greens in that painting and thought that similar colouring would work well on a hazy/dreamy forest background. I wanted the curves of light emanating from the fairies hands to represent or signify light and growth. Perhaps she's a Spring Fairy 'kick-starting' spring. If so, we need her around here - its mid April and I woke up this morning to snow!
