About Me: Having been born in a small Wisconsin farming town (pop. 425), the sixth out of seven children, I always knew I would escape. My brother-in-law says as a child I always used to pronounce that one day I would live in Australia. Well, I never quite made it that far, but I did make it to England I am married with 2 children of 8 and 6.
As most full time mums will admit however, despite never having enough hours to do everything, it can be quite mind-numbing at times. Having always been artistic – drawing, painting, writing and acting I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to indulge myself in pursuits that, I always knew in my heart, were my true calling. I took adult learning courses in photography, abstract painting and cartooning. In November 2006 I attended an inspiring course at Missenden Abbey on Creative Writing, the result of which can only be compared to the eruption of Mount St Helens.
Within a month I was sitting on the sofa next to hubby saying, “I would really like to write a book.” His response, which I knew would be supportive as it always has been was, “What would you write about?” “Fairies,” I said.
Now, after 18 years in England, I know the meaning of “put the kettle on” and can say oregAno and aluminIum without making my husband laugh. In support, however, my children refer to the under stairs cupboard as a “closet.”
And where has all this lead me?
Somewhere, between two worlds - or should I say three? (Including Faelond of course!)
Music: Just about anything. Concerts I've gone to over the past few years have varied from Anastacia to Meatloaf to Neil Diamond!
Movies: Lord of the Rings trilogy as it brought to life the books as I have always seen them. I also enjoy subtle acting and for that reason will choose films like The English Patient.
TV: I don’t watch much tv but when it’s on watch Lost, House and Ray Mears (for ideas for my book on Faelond/Faeryland). I sometimes watch the Sixth Sense and imagine who might come forward for me if I was there.
Books: Of course my own book is my main focus at the moment. The basic premise: three children, Lily, Ashlin and Edward enter the natural, yet magickal, realm of Faelond (fairyland) and embark on a pilgrimage to become fae. Whilst they believe their choice to take the pilgrimage is their own - wasn't (sinister stuff going on here!)
I’ve been reading a lot of children’s books, magical books, mythology etc to make the story interesting and readable. I have enjoyed Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and am currently reading the Septimus Heap series. The latter, although very creative contains a few things that are just too similar to Harry Potter and niggles at me. It’s a shame because they are mostly names which could easily have been changed without changing the story at all.
Likes: I like lots of things. Besides the usual of being a mum etc I do enjoy time on my own and can happily spend days in total silence. I am getting very interested in crystals, ley lines, faeries (of course) and all things beyond the realm of human sight.
Dislikes: Coming from American and now living in England the thing that I most dislike I suppose is the lack of customer care. It costs nothing to be nice and have pride in what you do. I guess I should also add exercise to this list.
Hobbies: Writing, writing, writing…reading, reading, reading…and painting large acrylic canvases of the 3 Fae Realms in my book.
Vices: I've a quick temper - although it has mellowed over the years.
Virtues: Gosh, someone else needs to answer this I think. I am a loyal friend and am always willing to help when possible.
Heroes: I wouldn’t say there is any one person I would look up to as a ‘hero’. I admire people who have a vision and determination to do things right and are willing to work hard to make things happen. I suppose if I were to look up to someone in that respect it would be Peter Jackson.
Hi there! I just recently joined this site and getting to grips with it. The book you just finished sounds interesting and I need a new one, so i will be looking out for that. Also love your pic. You're a girl after my own heart. I completed a crystal therapy course a couple of years ago so if you ever want books I can recommned a few for you too. I also love to write about faeries so if you publish anything let me know and I will also keep and eye out.
