The Pixie Of The Wildflowers Current mood: content
The Pixie of the WildFlowers--One Of A Kind Fairy Doll--FaerySpell Creations
This is the Pixie Of The WildFlowers. She is in charge of the growth and care of all the beautiful wildflowers in forests, feilds, and gardens. It is her song that makes them grow strong, healthy and plentiful.
Pixie is part of a new series of dolls that combine both of my favorite mediums for creating my fairies--softsculpture and polymer clay.
Her head, torso, arms from the elbow down and feet are entirely handsculpted (no molds used, ever) so there will never be another quite like her again.
Her face is hand drawn and painted. It was then attached to the head and torso, which were sculpted from italian air dry clay.
Pixie is approx. 14" tall, from the top of her head to the tips of her toes.
Her body is a strong wire armature wrapped in cotton batting covered in fabric, which allows her to be very gently posed.
Her magical face is handpainted with a blush of artist pigments, colors that I mix myself. Her gown is created of assorted vintage and antique laces, fabrics and ribbon that I've collected over the years and continually search out for my dolls.
Her wonderfully wild green hair is created from hand dyed mohair.
She wears a hat of a fabric blossom. (this is not removeable). Fabric blooms also decorate her clothing, and she holds a single daisy in her hand.

Poppy The Pixie Current mood: amused
Poppy The Pixie--One Of A Kind Fairy Doll--FaerySpell Creations
Keats had lifted up his hymeneal curls from out The poppy-seeded wine, With ambrosial mouth had kissed my forehead, Clasped the hand of noble love in mine ~ Oscar Wilde,1890
It may have been as early as Neolithic times that man became aware of the potent qualities latent in the seed pod of the fragile poppy flower. Poppies have been found in Egyptian tombs dating back 3,000 years. There is even a prescription for poppy to be given to children to stop their crying. It was known to the Assyrians and the mythology of Greece. Ancient Greeks thought that poppies were a sign of fertility. Poppy seeds were thought to bring health and strength so Greek athletes were given mixtures of poppy seeds, honey, and wine.
Demeter,so the legend goes, created the poppy for the purpose of getting some sleep after the loss of her daughter Persephone. The twin brothers Hypnos and Thanatos (sleep and Death) were represented as crowned with poppies or carrying poppies in their hands.
This is Poppy the Pixie.
Poppy is a hanging doll, and her head, torso and hands are entirely handsculpted (no molds used, ever) so there will never be another quite like her again.
Her arms to the elbow are a wrapped-wire armature, to allow her to be *very gently* posed in many whimsical positions.
Poppy's enchanting face is handpainted with a blush of artist pigments, colors that I mix myself.
Her gown is created of assorted vintage and antique laces, fabrics and ribbon that I've collected over the years and continually search out for my dolls. It is trimmed with fabric flowers and leaves, and more fabric flowers are in her hair. Her wings are also wired and poseable (but not removeable).
Poppy's eyes are semi-precious hematite beads, and her wild red hair is maribou, She is approx. 10" tall.
She will come beautifully giftwrapped, and have a certificate signed by the artist (Me!)

Heather,Faery of the Highlands--One Of A Kind Fairy Doll--FaerySpell Creations
"Fresh air spring smile of my darling Heather, Whether or not to prance on the heather. Oh lass, so fancy free, full of desires Dancing upon my heartbeats full of fire.
Spirited she is this heavenly Heather, Billowing blossoms upon the heather. Heaving up and down blinding one’s eyesight, It is enough to make a man lose sight.
One must always be aware of Heather For she will spin your dreams on the heather. With her forcefully kissing your head dizzy, Infatuation left in a tizzy.
Sundress of sunshine full figured Heather, Radiant brilliance contrasting heather. Fragrance of love’s tender special moments Whispering words of sensual merriment..."
--Excerpt from David L. Young's poem, "Heavenly Heather"
Heather is a symbol of beauty in solitude.
Heather is a Goddess herb associated with the planet Venus and sacred to Isis.
It is carried to bring good luck. White heather is the best for this purpose. Heather when burned with fern outside attracts rain, or dip heather and fern in water and sprinkle around to conjure rain.
Heather has also long been used to conjure ghosts. Red Heather is used for passion, to start or end an affair. Purple for spiritual development. White for cooling passions of unwanted suitors.
This is Heather.
Her head, torso, feet and hands are entirely handsculpted (no molds used, ever) so there will never be another quite like her again.
Her arms to the elbow and her body from the waist down are a wrapped-wire armature, to allow her to be *very gently* posed in many whimsical positions.
Heather's sweet face is handpainted with a blush of artist pigments, colors that I mix myself.
Her gown is created of assorted vintage and antique laces, fabrics and ribbon that I've collected over the years and continually search out for my dolls. It is trimmed with fabric flowers and leaves, and more fabric flowers are in her hair. She wears a tiny green ladybug 'brooch'.
Heather's eyes are semi-precious hematite beads, and her hair is soft white lambswool carefully applied one plait at a time. She is approx. 10" tall.

What is your workspace like? It's a wonderland of a room in our lovely victorian house in the San Francisco Bay Area, FILLED with faeries and mythic creatures---it sometimes doubles as our guest room, and people swear that the faeries have wild parties in the middle of the night ;)
What makes you happy? My children, my husband and creating, whether it's sculpture, sewing or drawing. I also love music, books and traveling.
What first sparked your love for fantasy? How old were you? I think I've always loved fantasy--I was a real sweetpea sort of little girl, very shy and quiet always daydreaming and making up my own worlds full of creatures out of my imagination. ( Hmmmm...I don't suppose I've changed much!) I really can't remember a particular moment, I've always sort of been wrapped in dreams and magic.
What do you like most about the fantasy genre? I've never been into fantasy as a genre, per se, but I do love fairytale and myth and I think the popularity and interest in fantasy as a genre helps spark interest in those things for others--it's a wonderful doorway.
What is your favorite fantasy book/movie/series? Oh, now that's a question. I have so many favorite movies and books! Lord of the Rings, the Narnia Series (for both of those, I love the films as well as the books.) Peter Pan. Alice in Wonderland. Robin Hood. Goblin Market, by Christina Rosetti. Phantastes by George MacDonald is a wonderful book. I love the Arthurian legends too, and the film based on them, Excalibur. Other films I love are Pans Labyrinth, Mirror Mask,City of Lost Children, Legend, Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal.
I really could go on and on, but I'll stop there :)
Are you formally trained or self-taught? Entirely Self Taught
Any artists who inspire you? So many! I'm constantly seeing amazing work that inspires me. As far as well known artists, I tremendously enjoy the work of Brian and Wendy Froud, Alan Lee, Arthur Rackham, and Edward Dulac. Artistically I'm also inspired by old world dolls and marionettes.
What do you hope people will feel when they see your art? The most wonderful thing that I hear from people is that my faeries make them smile. That's the best compliment of all!
What advice would you give to other artists/Etsy sellers? Etsy is a wonderfully supportive, creative community for artists. I would say to do well there, just keep creating what makes you happy, and then get out there all the time and communicate with other etsians and the world at large. Let everyone see what you do. Create, share, and promote. And no matter what, keep going and believe in your dream :)
How do you handle criticism? As regards to my art, I really try to look at criticism realistically and constructively. What can I learn from what someone is saying to me? And then you also have to remember too, art is a highly personal thing. One person may be touched deeply by what you do, and another person, not at all. I just do what makes me happy, and if I can make someone else smile, that's the frosting on the cake.
What motivates you? The love from my family--my husband and two boys-- nature, music, poetry, mythology and fairytales, seeing beautiful work by other artists.
