I missed enchantedfolk, but I've been really, really, REALLY busy lately. I've found out that I'm graduating in summer instead of the fall, which is good, but that means my last two semesters at my school are going to be unrelenting. With a good two weeks left until the end of this semester (ack!), I'm in the midst of trying to pull myself together to finish with a bang. Humor and Donald O'Connor are going to be what get me through my remaining weeks. I'm seeing a vast improvement in my work, so that's always a real confidence builder. I've also been introduced to the wonderful painting process that is glazing. Now I know why Maxfield Parrish chose to use the glazing process for his works. It's so liberating and in some cases, forgiving. I love it!
As of about a month and a half ago, I finally had a break through in how to do true gesture drawings, which has made my artistic process exceedingly easier. So, lots of good school/ art related things happening, but...this little green haired artist needs a break. Uncle!
In other news, I'm a vendor at the Denver Waldorf's Festival of Light on December 5th. Every chance I get to go back to any Waldorf school is a treat for me. When I was little I went to the one in Southern California, and most of my happy childhood/ school related memories came from my time spent there. I would have loved to have STAYED in the school for my whole career, but alternative schools scared my Dad and he made my Mom pull me out...even though both Mom and I were squarely against it. C'est la Vie, non?...I feel like Auntie Mame everytime I segway into french like that.
Other than that, I'm just keeping my head above water until I can burst out of the waves and into the tide pool for some well earned relaxation.
I hope all is well with y'all...y'all. Huh, I don't use that one very often.
The Waldorf schools are so awesome up here... I got to play the "king" role at the graduating ceremony, knighting all the kids. (What an honor!) The kids had *such* a blast all day too, with all kinds of fantastic happenings to participate in. I think my fave was the pond filled with big, square floats that the kids had to try to run across without losing balance and falling in! I also got to resque a girl who passed out next to me after the mud-draw... (She woke up in a cot with the "king" by her side, giving her a Gatorade slush! Big eyed smiles :^)
We're really going to have to be patient here Tangle, ready to welcome you back next Summer when you've finally some time to spend with us (and show us new techniques!). Wishing you all the best in pummeling your studies!
When I first attended my school, I was in love with it, but as I get closer and closer to graduating...I find myself falling out of love with it mainly because of the office politics going on.
As it stands now, to graduate on time I have to take 15 credits per semester, which I'm okay with, but for multiple semesters, I have to take a prerequisite course concurrently with the course I need the prerequisite for. It sounds like a bad idea to me because I would think that you need a foundation to stand on before your take the next step, yes? Am I missing something here?
So my question for any illustrators reading this is...what has your experience been? Are there any alternative art colleges out there I should be looking at? Should I just bite the bullet and hope for the best? Any and all advice and insight would be extremely appreciated because I am very frustrated and confused by all of this.
I took an illustration degree. I'm from the UK so our system is a bit different from yours I think. After finishing school I stayed on to do two more extra years to get a few more qualifications and then went on to college for a art and design course for a further two years. After that I went on to University for my degree. I can honestly say to you I wish I hadn't :( I did not have a very good time on my course. I was not nurtured or encouraged in anyway with my art. In my second year I was very very close to dropping out that's how miserable I had become. However that is MY experience, that doesn't mean to say that you will have to go through the same as me. I would say do your research on where it is you want to go to. Take a look and see what students are having their piece showcased on the website or open days. I should have known better when my tutor came to visit when I was still at college and he said he doesn't like work based on myth and legend. I was doomed but it doesn't mean you will be!
I think it depends on what you would like to do with your art, do you want to be an illustrator, animator, or work with fine art?
I have taken illustration, animation and a fine art degree, and I found all of it very useful. No matter what you would like to work with basic drawing skills is importuned!
I never pursued my own personal ideas of art when I took the art degrees, I saw it as education, that would give me the tools to develop my own style later.
So I was looking on the faerieworlds website two nights ago, when I remembered a conversation with someone on EF a while back, about creating a sign designating a spot for members of EF to meet and greet each other at the Faerieworlds festival. I ran the idea past Jen and since then, I've been having a blast designing signs and downloading new fonts to play with (squee!). I can't keep sending Jen e-mails with my new brainstorms, cause if I did that her inbox would fill up in about five minutes, so...I posted them here :)
I'm not sure which one is the final sign, or if I'm even done playing, but this is what I have thus far.
If you're going to the festival, keep your eyes peeled for a sign that says, " Merry Meet of Enchanted Folk." I, for one, would love to put some names with some faces :)
You are such a lovely to think of this dearest Tangle, your signs are enchanting *big smiles* I hope you got some Hellos there... Thank you for truly entering into the spirit of our community ~ sending you many magical blessings and happy thoughts,
Hello Enchanted folk! I'm back...for how long I'm not sure. Life keeps drafting me into its fast pace army, so my attention is hither and yonder. :)
At the moment, I'm working my tail off making as many dolls as humanly possible for the Faerie worlds festival this summer, because Jennifer (-FaerySpell Creations) and I are sharing a booth. I'm so excited! I've finally gotten back into my sculpting and I'm loving every minute of it. I'm going to be selling mostly pipe cleaner dolls, but I'll also have a few polymer dolls. Wee! My only issue is that I can't post pictures of everything I've been doing on my website because my camera is dead. D-E-A-D. It lets me take one crappy picture and then it shuts itself down. I do have a few shots though...well, a few shots of the polymer dolls because there are less of them than the pipecleaner dolls, but ya know.
She's the first in my "Goblin Girls" series. I was watching Anything Goes while making her outfit, so she is mitzi Gaynor inspired (dress wise), hence the name :)
Another Goblin Girl. I was watching Call me Madame for this one, so her outfit is inspired by Vera-Ellen.
And last, but DEFINITELY not least...Nanna.
Oh, and I've been meaning to make mention of this for a while now, but even if I don't reply to any comments, I do read and really appreciate them. For some odd reason, whenever I go to reply back to someone, I don't feel like I should be :/
These are wonderful Tangle, and it will be so fun this summer sharing a booth with you at FaerieWorlds...can't believe it's been a year (almost) already!

Thanks to a scene in The Rescuers Down Under...I have my art groove back at long last :)
There is this one part where Cody (the main character) jumps off a waterfall into a flock of birds in flight, and it was just such a powerful scene for me that I decided to re-create it in Art Nouveau style. I have yet to paint it (I'll be doing that when it isn't one o'clock in the morning), but as it stands at the moment...I really, really like what I have. Fly, Cody! Fly!
Nothing much else to say at the moment. I'm dancing around my apartment right now because of this and had to share my joy with SOMEONE.
Hope you are well :) You *must* be busy, as I haven't heard from you in many moons, so wanted to stop by and say hello--my fairies were also telling me they missed hanging out with yours so I stopped by your etsy shop and adopted a few fairies and a couple of goblins too! :) They will make very lovely additions to my faery studio and be wonderful (and mischevious, I am sure!) companions to my own faeries :P
I am sure you are already known as Faery girl at college. Your work sounds wonderful and i hope you share some photos with us. The Faery Market sounds wonderful.
Wishing you magical Thanksgiving with your parents, don't eat too much, leave room for the chocolate!!!!
Stopping by to wish you a magical fun filled weekend. Prioritise your projects, take a deep breath, relax and one step at a time work your way through. wow! I should try that too cos I am a fine one to talk!
hooray!! - thanks for the lovely comment on my book!! - I'm so delighted by the image of you dancing round the bookshop, I'm grinning from ear to ear!! xxx - I do so hope it really happens! - do let me know!
Hi Tangle I just saw your comment at Susan's... I've already decided that I'm going to wear a hat saying "Smile if you're Enchanted!" as I walk around with my big camera. :^)
Or perhaps we should just have a flagged meeting spot? (Could you come up with some eye-catching design for one?)
Btw, why not come to FaeryWoods? Even closer than Oregon for you... ;^)
