    in need of advice

Thursday, May 15, 2008, 01:06 PM EST [General]

Hi everyone! I need a little advice! As you know i am going to the doll and teddy bear expo in august. One of the sculptures going with me is my sculpt of Coahme the dragon Mage and Althiel the dragon. I have been told by many that i should charge at least $1,000 for this sculpt as it is 1 1/2 feet tall, contains semi-precious gems, swarovski crystals, pearls, and took a really long time to make. Now i have people telling me that i should not charge that much because no one is going to pay that much! pricing has never been my thing. now mind you at the expo those people come in expecting to fork over some cash....im just not sure. So if you all feel up to it take a look at my sculpt and tell me...if you had the money to spend would you pay that much for this sculpt...and if not how much WOULD you pay. thank you all for your help! Im need to figure this out soon..sheesh.

Standard formula for regular retail pricing is cost of materials plus cost of labour (Pay yourself a minimum of $10 per hour, but don't be afraid to double or triple that number) plus 40% equals retail price. But that's for manufactured goods -- for one of a kind art, use cost of materials plus 50%, plus cost of labour plus 25%, plus 100% equals retail price... Or price it at whatever you feel the market will bear. Personally (and if I had the money), I'd gladly pay $750, and strongly consider $1000...

I don't have much to add to Rdehwyll's comments (who I feel is right about this) except to say that when I have done shows, I bring in one showy expensive piece to draw customers in. They mostly buy the less expensive art, but I expect that: I am just happy that the one piece draws them in. Anyway, you could look at it this way unless you really have to sell the piece.

    Blessings

Okay i have gotten some sleep and am now able to write in the english language instead of the language of the sleep deprived(which is an english optional language that usually consists of grunts and growls!) So ..a bit about me. I have been sculpting since i was 14 years old, although i did not always sculpt faes dragons and such. I used to make beads and little knick knacks and things like that. I just started doing what im doing now about three years ago. I,d like to believe that in the three years i have grown as an artist. Right now i am busily at work preparing for the Doll and Teddybear EXPO in washington, D.C coming in august. Iam ripping my hair out on this one folks.....very worried about all the waaaaaaaaayyyyyyy better sculptors that are going to be there! BBBUTT i digress... so i am in absolute love with this site, everything is so beautiful! thank you again for welcoming me into your group. Blessed Be all , and may your day be beautiful and kind.

Not sure when the Washington Expo is in August, but if it's later in the month, you could do a 'trial run' at the Western PA Faeriefest in Slippery Rock the first weekend in August... Just a thought and hopefully helpful suggestion...
