Beaux Arts Masquerade Ball this weekend!
FaerieCON! (Cross posted from MySpace)
Oh
FaerieCon! It's probably too soon to write. I usually have to let things sink
in a bit. But let's see.
Favorite
part of FaerieCon: Seeing all my friends but not having to work! Of course
there was Sweet Melissa, Posie, Lynne, and Karen, who were my roomies. But
Also, Virginia and Angie, Drusilla and her daughter, Cynthia, Linda Biggs,
Sweet Pea, Crystinia, Drew and Be, Linda and her husband, Kim and Mary and all
the fine minions of Faerie Magazine (i mean that in a good way!), the Reyens,
Shannon of Razor's Edge, Sue Kemp (the PASTAFARIAN!), Rob and Lucy of Spoutwood
Farm, Michael Kaiser He of the Mead, oh, and many of my other vendor friends.
Second
favorite part of FaerieCon: meeting the new friends and hopefully, some new
vendors. Sara, whose whole name I have to ask someone at Faerie Magazine, I
felt like I knew before, beautiful strawberry blond talle girl. It was fun
meeting Linda's husband, he reminded me of my own non-fairy but lovingly
indulgent husband. They will probably go fly-fishing together this May during
Fairie Festival, as Linda's bringing him along!
High
Point: I guess some would think it was meeting luminaries such as Charles Vess
and Wendy Froud. That was fine, but my FAVORITE part of FaerieCon was just
hanging out with my buds. We walked the streets between the hotel and the Con,
and people brightened up when they saw us with our brightly colored wings and
FABULOUS costumes. I loved it when Karen and I wandered into the wrong part of
the convention center where the American College of Gastroenterology was having
their convention and we kept asking people if we were at the Bad Faery Ball
(everyone looked so grim). Having dinner at Asia Street (I think that's what it
was called) was a riot.
Disappointments:
They were VERY minor! It was extremely weird to be seeing all these Nature
Spirits in a convention center with all its concrete and steel. Downright
disconcerting! I do'nt think I really got used to it. When I saw Rob and Lucy
of Spoutwood Farm I became extremely disoriented, because my association with
them is so strongly to the Farm. Also, the bands at the Ball just did not Rock.
They were interesting, in an esoteric kind of way. People on the dance floor
were just basically waving their arms and dancing more or less like flowers and
trees in the wind. I guess I'm so used to having rockin' bands like Albannach
with their strong drum presence, and Telesma with their psychedelic energy. But
whatever. It was fun being there all Dressed Up with my friends!
What
did I wear?! I think I blogged about this but I may have changed my mind. The
first day, Friday, I wore my pretty little outfit that Jesse Elaine of
Imagination's Flight: dark blue corsetted top which I embroidered, and a
pixie-hemmed skirt of dark blue and black. and of course, my fabulous wings by
Lynne - the black and blue with the spidery elements. For the good fairy ball,
I wore my dusty blue fairy dress. I bought this dress back in '89 for daughter
Phoebe to wear as a bride's maid dress in our wedding. It's really lovely. I borrowed
some light blue velvetty wings (which I bought later!) from Lynne that were
just perfect. Saturday I wore my gorgeous green Reyen Designs dress with
lynne's little green wings (These are the wings I'm wearing on my myspace
page). I got many compliments on this dress, and sent many a customer to the
Reyen Design booth! SATURDAY NIGHT was the Bad Faery Ball. I wore my red and
black fishnetty dress with my old 70's pointy toed boots. They are incredible
little shoes but I don't wear them that often so by the end of the evening my
tootsies were a bit sore. Finally, Sunday, I went back to the blue dress I wore
to the Good Faery Ball 'cause it's soooo comfy.
The
Fashion Show looked great. I helped get it ready on Saturday but was so
stressed out when we were finished that I pretty much decided I couldn't handle
it on Sunday. We were in a tiny little "room" with all these
beautiful clothes and accessories that we were trying to put together and then
write descriptions of for the MC to read. We got it done, and the girls looked
beautiful. I had been asked to model but decided it was way too much trouble,
and besides, there were so many gorgeous young ladies there was no shortage!
I'm
wondering how vendors did there. If any are reading this, please let me know !
I didn't get the sense that things were flying off the shelves except for a few
exceptions. Maybe there should be more of a push to get retailers there, and
make it into more of a trade show? Also, where were the organizers? Maybe it's
the way things are done at these Cons, but at Fairie Festival, I'm so used to
seeing all of US out there, shouting and having a grand old time (think of Rob
dancing in his Greenman costume!) but I had no idea where the people were that
made this happen except I think once at one of the Balls they were introduced.
Some of
us were talking about how COOL it would be if FaerieCon were held in Baltimore.
Think of the quirky people that live there, first of all, and then think of all
the amenities they have! Imagine a reception at the American VIsionary Arts
Museum! The Ball held at the 8x10! The waterfront with all the buskers! Would
John Waters make an appearance? The Midnight Movies held at the Charles Theater
(too bad the Orpheum is gone). Etc. Philadelphia was OK but why not take
advantage of all that (i'll say it again) quirkiness?! (Oh yeah it would also
be a lot closer to me.... but whatev).
Well
that's about all I can spill out now. Maybe I'll think of some other tidbits.
Check out my pics (they're on my MySpace page -- http://www.myspace.com/hillbilly_fairy
just click on view my pics and then choose the FaerieCon album).
I don't
know if I'l upload them here or not, maybe later: and if you have any, please
let me know! Those of you that were there that are reading this, please comment
anything i missed or that you'd like to add!
