    Advice to Artists! :)

Monday, February 18, 2008, 12:29 PM CST [General]

First, I want to thank everyone for the nice notes!  I read every word, and though I don't have time to write everyone back individually, I want to acknowledge all you lovelies right here and right now! :)  Thank YOU so much for your interest in my work, it is my honor - truly.

I have gotten a few comments from artists asking how to best get their art out there.  I have an advice section on my web site as well, but wanted to post here.

First and foremost, I encourage all artists to utilize the world wide web.  It's the single greatest tool at our disposal.  Get yourself a beautiful web site that meshes well with your art.  Even if it's an ebay store, get it "out there".  Don't fret if you don't get flooded with orders the instant you put your site up.  This takes time to build.  If you have a budget, I highly recommend doing a pay per click add program, such as: www.overture.com

Then, network!  This wonderful place is a great way to start!  Chat with other artists, see what is working well for others.

Don't limit yourself to just prints either....the more items you have to offer, especially useful items, the better your sales will be!

Do some shows too!  Get a table at Faerieworld, FaerieCon, Spoutwood, etc. or your Local Ren Faire!  This is a great way to build a fan base.

Knock, knock, knock on doors!  Don't expect companies to find you at first...approach them, and do it professionally with a beautiful, professional portfolio or well composed e-mail introduction letter.  But, don't cross the line and harrass...just be subtle :)

Last....beware of pitfalls.  Beware of agents that represent numerous artists who want complete control over your work.  This should be a red flag.  It is too hard for an agent with many many artists to give you the attention you deserve.  Some agents really can open doors for you though, so if you must, align yourself with one with a good reputation.  Check them out on the bbb.com (Better Business Bureau) and ask other artists who are with them how their experience has been.  In my ever so humble opinion, no one can represent you as well as you can represent yourself...so go for it and don't be shy!

Above all else....be kind!  Forums and on-line chats can be tricky.  They are a great way to form real frienships...but for some...it leads to unkind words...things you may not normally ever say in person.  Keep in mind that words, even on-line, can be very hurtful.  Be kind to other artists always...keep the gossip to a minimum...and focus your very precious creative energy on creating beauty.  Make that your mantra!

I hope this helps...I have always loved helping other artists.  For those of you just getting started and still at the amateur level, I'd like to invite you to enter my annual art contest!  It is free to enter, and the winner gets cool prizes (yes!). :)  You can read about it at my web site: www.enchanted-art.com

    Keep smiling!

Thank you posting the ‘advise to artists’. It’s refreshing to read such open, honest and useful advise. I think that too often artists view each other as competition and are often reluctant to divulge ‘trade secrets’ techniques etc. From my own limited experience I’ve gained more pleasure (and help and support in return) by sharing what I have learned. Your art and attitude are an inspiration.
    Kind Regards,

Iagree with this advice 100%! Not only does it work for Artists, but for Writers as well -- a carefully prepared manuscript, presented following the publishing house's/magazines writers guidelines, will at least be looked at, and that's the first step for either profession!

Fantastic Jess, we echo every sentiment. There are some rather unscrupulous people out there. I would only add - if a contract sounds too good to be true, it probably is but you'll only find out when it's too late and costly to get out of!

Hello to all you fellow Enchanted Folk!

I'm quite pleased to be here, and will be looking forward to getting to know you all better through this little haven that Drew and Be created.

Drew and Be, it is very fitting that you both are my two first friends here!  You've done a wonderful job creating this place and should be proud of such an innovative idea.  Our industry has been through a lot this past year, and I think it's great that we can have a place like this to become close and feel that warm fuzzy friendship feeling with like minded souls.

    Hugs,

    Jess
