About Me: Read the rest here and I think it will give you enough about me to realize who I am, what I'm about, how I go about it and if you might actually be interested in the person I am enough to try and get to actually know me.
Music: I'm a child of the 80's, love its music, and some from just about every other genre. Jazz, classical, music box music, new wave, punk, metal, hard rock, new age, electronica, alternative, and different stuff done by or found by friends who've passed on great music over the years and whom I hope continue to do the same over the coming years. As I discover things I enjoy, I also like to share them with those I know.
Movies: See "Books", then envision this section going on somewhat along similar lines. I own copies of everything from silent films to recent blockbusters, musicals to horror flicks, sci-fi to documentaries. I'm just picky about the quality and craft that went into the creation of the telling of the tale.
TV: See "Movies" and realize the same applies here.
Books: Sooo many, read, to read, reading...I shan't bother to list them here. I've read and continue to read a diverse selection and have given up on my reading lists because they gained further reading lists which begat further reading lists ad nauseum to the point it became pointless and I now read what I'm able as I can with the hope of catching up some time about a quarter past my demise.
Likes: Ah...the simple things in life...time with my family...friends, new and old...a good meal...a rousing, heated, passionate discussion with friends or new acquaintances...the redwoods...a good scotch...a good wine...a good mead...a good scotch...a good book...a good song...being able to help a friend...seeing that bit of magic touch someones life...seeing that bit of magic touch my own life in some way...sparking that bit of magic in someone else's life...
Dislikes: This one is a land mine I am gingerly stepping over. You'll know them should you commit one. I'm far from shy when it comes to giving my opinion and hope the same is true of you.

The only one I'll admit here is my intense dislike of getting cornered and forced to give answers to people who truly don't want the answer they are seeking, yet don't recognize the fact that my evasions are to spare them the pain of the answer I'll cheerfully give so that I can revel in the discomfort it causes. (Ah, the admission of a vice, yet that section is filled with other information. ;)
Hobbies: Many, varied, expensive (some so much so that I've let them go for now), and constantly changing/evolving.

However, I'm very involved with the Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade Ball, a hobby gone cheerfully awry.
Vices: I drink a bit of scotch or whiskey, a glass or two, most evenings. I enjoy a good glass of wine, or better yet a mead or beer that I, my wife, a friend or new acquaintance has brewed on occasion as well.
Virtues: Trustworthy, loyal, caring, compassionate, thoughtful...
Heroes: My parents, my daughter, friends, shipmates and fellow citizen soldiers I've served with over the years and a few others who shall remain nameless lest they gain further swelling to their egos. ;)

Let me add those who teach me by their example of how not to be, for I think it important to note that sometimes those who think they are harming us most are amongst our greatest teachers about ourselves.

    Just a Few Things

Saturday, December 20, 2008, 11:54 AM EST [General]

So very much of nothing has been going on for some time now. Our chickens are doing well, even with the loss of our little Sammy (neatest little bird ever! But more about her some time else) the flock is well and growing at an astonishing rate. We're looking forward to eggs in another six or so weeks. Doesn't hurt that we're also getting to wonder what color they'll be. :)

Work has been what it is, didn't get the job in San Diego I'd been asked to apply for, but it's a good lesson in the apparent need for a piece of paper that says I know what I already know. Funny how had I had the degree I'd have had the job, but then, such is life. So I'm looking at college optioins now.

Our house is coming together slowly, two rooms completed in the painting department, and only the ever present 1001 projects left to complete that any home owner has to accomplish as time permits. All in all I'm getting used to the home owner aspect of life rather easily.

There is typical daughter's mother drama, seeing as my daughter should have been on a plane yesterday, but it isn't the end of the world and, though unfortunate, not entirely unexpected. At some point my ex will realize that she is only causing harm to herself and to my daughter and their relationship when she plays these games, my focus has to simply be on what is best for my daughter in even the least cheerful of situations.

All in all, life is in a rather slow mode of day in and day out sort of ebb and flow that is enjoyable in the main, and so I've been able to pick my books up again and begin to read and study in earnest things that had gotten onto the back burner for some time. Soon, I'm sure, the pace will pick up again and the race will be on and time in short supply.

    Enjoying Home

Only lost one rose bush, it was young and only recently planted, so though we mourn its loss, it is not as if we'd formed any great bonds with it as yet. Perhaps we'll replace it with another, and perhaps we'll just wait and see.

We're now up to 13ish windchimes in our back yard. Three are solar powered and have LED's in them that light up and cycle through blue, green, red, purple and yellow adding nicely to the nightime ambiance of the yard. With all of them chiming in the wind it is a nice symphony, especially with the rush of the wind through the boughs of the trees and the trickling of the waterfall into the pond. Some of the chimes could use a little maintence, but then so can most of the yard after our absence.

I'm really looking forward to getting fish into my pond SOON! I've just got to figure out where the closest place that sells what I want is and when I can afford the time for the trip.

All in all life is good, I've quit my job at the hospital and am working on another that should allow me to do what I want when I want so that I can work from anywhere anywhen that works for me. I'm stoked by this opportunity because it means I'll finally have time to do a number of projects that I've dreamed of working on for years but not had the time or energy for before. Life is good.

And even though the ball for this year is now past, here is this years flyer, I'll post next years when I get it. Pics from the show are soon to follow.

My Goodness! I've been slack in posting here...in an effort to get to where I'd like to be...the XIth labyrinth of Jareth Fantasy Masquerade Ball was a great success. The weekend before last my family and I arrived at the Sypher House and dove in headlong into preparations (prop building, finishing touches on costumes, logistical efforts, etc.) for the Ball. The week was filled with the delightful chaos of feverish work from early in the morning until the wee hours of the morn followed by a scant few hours of sleep and then back to consciousness  to do it all over again until this Friday just past which saw us load in to the venue and get the doors open for the first night of the Ball.

As anyone familiar with the Labyrinth of Jareth knows, describing the evening is just the other side of impossible. Pictures fail to do more than show the costumes worn, video give an idea of the acts performed, but the essence, the ambiance is magically elusive and something to be experienced. It is truly an amazingly magical gathering of creativity and wonder fostered by Lord Striders Royal Court as it touches the mortal realm for two evenings.

Yes, I’m gushing about something I help make happen. No I’m not being that helpful in describing it. I make no apology other than for the fact that language truly fails us in the endeavor to covey what occurs. I am blessed to be a part of the crew that helps bring it all together. My family and I put our hearts, blood, sweat and tears into this event as do many of our closest friends.

One of my personal favorite moments of this years ball was when one of the House security staff came up to me Saturday night and apologized for being upset with me Friday night when he asked what Saturday night would be like and I told him, "Just wait to see." His eyes were gleaming with delight and he made it clear that he understood that I hadn't been just putting him off with my answer but had actually been enjoining him to wait patiently to be delighted by something ephemeral and ineffable until experienced. One more spark of magic kindled and carried out into the dark of the world at the end of the evening.

Other favorite moments include watching my daughter as she went from project to project working on props and costumes as at thirteen she is finally physically big enough to join in a lot of work she’s not been able to help out with in years past. (She showed she hasn’t been just sitting around over the last five years, but has been learning what she could as we’ve all taught her bits and pieces over time for working with the materials used in all we do. Blessedly this year I do not have to listen to her usual litany of frustration that she needs to get big enough so she can help out more. No, now its plots and plans for how to help make things work out better!) Seeing the look on all the patrons’ faces as the evening evolved. Greeting old patrons, some of whom have been in attendance for longer than my wife and I have been involved with the show, as well as meeting new patrons who have come not knowing exactly what it is they are getting into and yet are still there knowing they have found that which they hunger for. I also always love seeing peoples reaction to the fact that my wife makes all of our costumes (my daughter gets to make her own next year having proven she’s got a knack for sewing herself this year) and that they always look fantastic!

I also enjoy our crew breakfasts Saturday and Sunday mornings as we go over issues that have come up and discuss lessons learned along with anecdotes from the evening before. Because there is always so much going on it is impossible to see everything going on at once all over the venue and the only way we have of seeing the whole picture is to share what each of our individual evenings was like. We still miss things, but that is the joy of it all as well.

Anyway, that should be plenty for now and I’ll look at posting more once we are finally back home and settled in and rested a bit.
