About This Group

The May Day Fairie Festival at Spoutwood Farm (fairiefestival.net) includes 4 tribes, each in friendly competition with the other: The Meadow Tribe, the Woodland Tribe, the River Tribe, and last but not least, the MIGHTY MOUNTAIN TRIBE! The competition is to have the most and the loudest presence at the festival. Each day it's the job of the tribes to gather as many fae and mortal at the Maypole Court to observe, and participate in, a Royal Ceremony. on Friday, this is the ceremony where the King and Queen of the past year officially relinquish their crown. On Saturday, the new King and Queen (and a lucky Prince and Princess!) are crowned. On Sunday, The King and Queen make their oath for the year to come. In turn, each Tribe leader makes an oath to protect and love that part of the Land that they are responsible. It's so much fun and I would LOVE for you to join my tribe! Our chant is MEKA LEKA HI! MEKA HINEY HO! SPIRITS OF THE MOUNTAIN, LET'S GO! Please join us!!!!!

    The Beautiful Mountains

Sunday, October 21, 2007, 04:48 PM EST [General]

I am fortunate enough to live in a valley surrounded by beautiful mountains. They're part of the Appalachians, ancient mountains worn down to gentle swells. When I first saw the Rockies, I remarked to my aunt how much bigger they were than ours. She replied by saying that ours are special because of how old and gentle they are.

My favorite time to visit Cacapon Mountain, the one closest to me, is early in the morning. I drop my daughter off at school, then take the dog up to the overlook. Before we start our walk through the woods, we sit and look out over the treetops. Quite often fog or mist is drifting through the trees, swaying gently in the ever-present breezes. If I squint, I can imagine the valley as it must've looked back in the days when the valley was a sea. The mists become waves, the trees, seaweed. Then, I close my eyes, and the sounds of breezes becomes the tide. If I'm really tuned in, I can hear them: the calls of the spirits of the mermaids that lived there. I believe they are still here, now become dryads and sylphs here in the mountains.

My favorite activity, besides just walking and smelling the air, is creating Stone People. I was inspired by a New Hampshire artist, Mark Ragonese, when he was one of our visiting artists last year. He taught the children to build simple sculptures by piling stones into shapes. You can see my Stone People at my Myspace -- someday maybe I'll post them here!

OK -- the sun is setting and there is so much still to do!

    Join the Mountain Tribe!

Saturday, October 20, 2007, 08:03 PM EST [General]

Whether you attend the May Day Fairie Festival (fairiefestival.net) in person or not, please join us online at least! The Festival has 4 tribes in friendly competition to get the most members! There is the Woodland Tribe led by Sweet Melissa; the River  Tribe led by the charismatic Otter; the Meadow Tribe led by our current Queen Posie, and the last but not least, the Mighty Mountain Tribe led by  Yours Truly, the HILLBILLY FAIRY! Each day we make merry and lead mortals and fae alike to the Maypole area, where various ROyal events occur. On Friday, the current King and QUeen officially relinquish their crowns. On Saturday, the New King and QUeen are crowned. And finally, on Sunday, the King and QUeen make their oaths to the assembled crowd. Each tribal leader also makes an oath to protect and love the Land that they are responsible for. It's a lot of fun -- we make much noise with our voices and instruments -- as we tumble down Frodo's Hill to the Maypole area. Join us here and we can plan this year's Mountain Tribe processional!
