    Music:

Movies: Movies are muse fodder. I love to soak in a flick when my well feels dry. The good ones always stir me at just the right time.

TV: TV sucks in general, but Firefly and Hero rock!!!
Books: Yay! Books are the Bomb. ;P

Likes: Books, books, books--I'm afraid I'm addicted. The smell of books, the feel of books, The large and the small of books. I like 'em.

I just can't get enough of the beach and all its beauty. The ocean is my home away from home. I truely believe I was once a mermaid. ;)
Dislikes: Grumpy people and shoping (which mostly seem to go together, oddly enough). I can't stand lima beans, but who can? And cooking makes me itchy.
Hobbies: Reading, reading, and more reading. Dirt bike ridding and hanging out with my honey and munchkins. People watching is up there on the fun scale for me, too.
Vices: Dark Chocolate and Mojitos (extra mint)
    Virtues: Ummm...
    Heroes: My dad

    Epilogue

Saturday, October 20, 2007, 05:23 PM CST [General]

Well, since I posted the last interaction with Epilogue here, I thought I would update you on how it's going. After getting rejected by them several times I subbed the same work to Fantastic Portfolio to get a better idea of what I need to work on. It was very helpful! And so I kept the things/problems they mentioned in mind with my next two pieces. The first was Eros:

I subbed it at Epilogue, and it got rejected for lack of detail or unrefined. Similar rejection to the previous subs. Well, I went to the forums there (another wonderful tool) and put it in the critique section for a little elaboration. The critiquer was great and pointed out several things I myself had been stewing over as probably the reasons for the reject. It wasn't fun getting the reject but it was great to know that I'd noticed the errors in drawing it (just couldn't seem to fix them--or get them right). It means my eye is improving. Yay!

So, then I subbed my latest drawing, Possession.

    It passed! Yay!

It's funny cause I saw three things that really bothered me in this one after I'd scanned it in and touched it up a little and I was fairly sure they would fail it for those reasons. And as I was drawing it all sorts of things were nagging at me. I hate that I have no faith in my skill. So many artists are more skilled and knowlageable than me. But it's nice to know that my eye is getting better.

So, I now have a gallery (consisting of one piece) at Epilogue:

    Rachel's Epilogue

    Yay!

Now I feel like I have a goal for my work. If it can pass the test I'm getting better with each piece. I just need to remember to still enjoy it too. :D

    Wondering...

Tuesday, September 25, 2007, 06:37 PM CST [General]

I'm trying to catch up on getting my art out there into the ether, and I knew there was one place I had to stop: Epilogue. The fantasy art site. I have several friends who have galleries there. Seems like a cool place.

So, I signed up and picked four pieces to submit. I knew there was a chance they'd say no, but I'm kind of used to being rejected from working as a writer for the last few years.

I was surprised, though, when all four were rejected. Here's what they said:

    Cali Girl had anatomy issues

Midnight said, lacks detail and/or unrefined

Jade said, lacks detail and/or unrefined

Innocence said, needs minor touching up

Okay, now, I'm not complaining here, I promise. :D

My question is: what now? Do I just keep subbing to them and hope they will like my work, eventually? The reasons they gave are very vague, and obviously a "choose A, B, or C" scenario. I guess I'm not sure what to do with this. I know I'm not The Bomb or anything. I have no delusions on that score. Just curious what others have experienced and maybe advice on how to make my work better (since it seems to have form and tech issues I was blissfully unaware of). ;)

Please, feel free to check these pieces out more closely to help me refine my work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks friends!

    Rachel~

    (((rachel)))
I remember when i first joined
epilogue i got all the work
i submitted rejected too, i started getting my work accepted eventually but i still get peices rejected most recently i got my Remebrance artwork of the little girl angel
i did in tribute for 9/11 i got the lacks detail and/or unrefined reason, do i agree with the judge? nope. :)

I don't always agree with the judges critiques i feel a lot of the times they judge art based on their own personal taste, i do feel some judges appreciate good works and a lot of them look for different things in art,i approach it this way now i can't please everyone and I'm human i feel a lot is asked sometimes from traditional artists.

I don't re-submit rejected peices i don't feel there is a point to, i know some artists who do but i just move on,some of the judges are very helpful they have a forum where you post wips or rejected peices and you can ask for the judge who rejected your peice questions like why? what do i need to fix in your ooinion? and so on..i once posted when i got an artwork rejected and the judge who rejected it was really nice and she helped me it was the little girl i did holding the globe _Imagine- it was something minor and i was able to fix .

If i was a judge i would accept all your work ,
your pencilwork is defined your shading is smooth and i don't see anything wrong with your anatomy we all have our own individual styles when it comes to art,i think we get better at our art over time i have seen it with me with older works my shading has more contrast now i'm not as afraid to press my pencil which i always was.

Like Jenna i too will recommend to you Fantastic Portfolios it's a great site and the judges actually give comments on your work whether they are rejected or not which gives an artist a better direction what to do .

I too hate giving critiques plus i don't like it,i'm the opposite i feel when you support someone and their work no matter what their art skills they become better at it and grow because they have that hope inside of them and start beleiving in themselves and their art improves, rejection in my opinion can make some people feel bad or doubt themselves and i don't like that.

I think your work is beautiful and creative *hugs*

Wow, Rach, I really don't know. I have yet to check out Epilogue myself. I truly love your work and am terrible at giving critiques and wouldn't dare since I feel that one should be an expert in whatever medium they are criting, which I am not. BUT I will give you this bit of advice...never give up! Your work has come a long way since we've first met and it just keeps getting more beautiful and well defined. :)
BTW, have you joined or looked into Fantastic Portfolios www.fantasticportfolios.c... ? If not, they jury in work as well, but all there crits are very detailed and constructive. I feel that they are helping me a great deal :)

    Innocence...

Sunday, September 23, 2007, 10:40 PM CST [General]

I was sick in bed Friday and Saturday, and my brain was too foggy to think and do work, so I took a small break from the illustration gig and cheated a little *shhhhh, don't tell the publisher*

    Here she is:

Not perfectly happy with it, but I have to move on. I think I botched it on the third butterfly in the upper left. :( Oh, well....

    Thanks for peeking.
