I logged into my Deviantart account this evening to find an interesting message waiting for me. I have never gotten anything like this before in my life and its got my blood pumping. But I am also feeling really skeptical about it and its legality and legitimacy.
So here I am asking for help. This is the Email I got.
Aubrey,
My name is ******, i'm a photographer from New Jersey. Recently I started making some pendants with my own photos, drawings and some artwork from others. Vintage stuff too.
I was wondering if you would allow me to use a square cropped version of your sun and moon paintings. I can't pay a big fee but I could give you a percentage of each pendant that sells with your image. Depending on the size, that would be $5 to $10 each for you. I'd name you as the artist of course.
If that sounds okay, please let me know.
Thanks
So my question is, Does this sound like a good opportunity to get my art out there and noticed? I am no where near New Jersey though and Not sure how he plans to pay me. I mean there are a lot of things I know to check for, but I am wanting advice and Opinions because I havent dealt with anything like this before.
I replied to the message asking questions about the artist and how he sold his work etc.
ANY advice would be much appreciated!
~Zeph

Zeph,
LiseUsually if someone wants to use your work, they lisence you for the use of your work. A lot of visual artists do this. There are designers shows in big cities throughout the country: an artist will produce a body of work for the show (in a 10 x 10 or 10 x 20 booth) & then manufacturers of rugs, dishes, home flags, kitchen towels, wrapping paper, fabrics, greeting cards, wallpaper, etc come around & look at your work & buy a lisence from you: which includes a length of time, retaining your copyrights to the work, royaltiies (fees over time), a one time useage fee (which can be anything: it tends to be in the a lower range for beginners & higher for seasoned designers). Anyway, an attorney that specializes in copyrights, patents, art & entertainment lisences might have a typical lisence agreement on hand. If you don't know of anyone, call your local art center & get a recommendation from them (they usually know who is good & who is not).
Good luck with all of this & keep us posted.
